This new free After Effects tutorial, with its associated preset, should delight many of you.
It will allow you to add expressions to your text layers, which will be calculated individually for each of your letters.
With the help of the expressions selector specific to text layers, you will be able to achieve complex animations in a simple way. No need to break down each letter on its own layer, you will be able to address your customers changes, calmly!
Download the preset : Version 2.0.3
Below you can download the .ffx preset , and then copy it into the presets folder of your After Effects install. It contains all the necessary expressions and controllers, you just have to apply it on a text layer. For those who need to go deeper, everything is explained in the tutorial!

How to use the preset ?
Thanks
Many thanks to Dan Ebberts for his excellent article on the simulation of realistic overshoot and bounce effects, whose expressions have served as the basis for this tutorial.
Thank you. This is SO useful :-)

Hello Mattias, excellent tutorial and and preset - thanks for making it available!
I'm wondering if you are using CS5.5 or CS6? Preferences are set the same in each but in CS6 using the preset on a text layer doesn't allow me to scrub the timeline in real time like it does in CS5.5 - is CS6 simply slower at processing expressions than CS5.5?
Thanks,
Chris
Hi Chris, I used CS5.5 in the demo, and I have the same problem as yours on CS6.. I don't know why, maybe it's due to the automated new caching system, that tries to cache the calculated expressions for each letters in the background. That's really annoying, and I found CS6 slower in general when working with expressions in general :/
Hey guys! Had the same problem in CS6 even on a solid state beast. BUT. I found something that really helped. In the Fast Preview dropdown changing to Fast Draft improved performance massively!
Thanks for the reply Mattias - at least I know I'm not the only one with that CS6 issue.
Cheers,
Chris
Merci beaucoup, j'adore tes tutoriels!.
¡¡Eres el mejor!!
Well done! Thanks so much!
Hello guys, in my CS6 preset did not work. Any hints of what would it be? Greetings from Brazil!
Hello, Thanks for the best tutorial ~
I've got a question about tutorial's preset. I really wanna get a overshoot preset and I downloaded that
But It was totally same with other tutorial's preset which is "Amortype 2.0 - Automatically create damped animation letter by letter"
That's tutorial's title. As you know there is a preset each. I thought they are different presets but when I used them had totally same functions.
How can I get a overshoot preset?
Preset works in CS6 for me, but it is so painfully slow that it's not worth using at this point. It doesn't seem to have any bearing on what the resolution is - third rez renders as slowly as full rez. I'll have to wait for an update - but it's a wonderful effect!
yeah, me too, painfully slow, but when he does the tutorial, it looks really fast.
I have a question about this. I think it works great but. What if i didnt want the type to start from the left. But rather from the center and the out to both ends.... Or also starting from the right side. I dont see how that can be possible. I have been trying with range selectors but nothing allows me to change the direction of how it starts to animate.
any clues?
it renders a loooot of memory! is there any way to change this?
hi, im having problems with the preset, its intensly slow to work with proving impossible to use on my machine, i have a brand new top spec imac with 32gb ram, ssd, 2gb nvidia etc.. i watched your tutorial and yours is lightning fast compared to mine.. is anyone else having this issue? any ideas?
thanks in advance
Great tut. I've been looking far and wide for this. Thanks for all of your hard work Matt!
work in CS6?
wow, i read the coments now.. thanks
As mentioned above, use the fast draft preview mode. In the composition window/panel (where you see the preview), there are several small icons at the bottom of the panel. Click on the icon to the right of the "view" drop down (1 view/2 views, etc). The icon should have a picture of a small box with a lightning bolt inside. In the drop down, select "fast draft". That should fix any problems.
It helped me a ton.
the preset is unsupported in AE CC 2017
any solution ?
Can I commercial use for this?
