Today I’m opening a new category on the blog, “studio,” where I’ll be posting short articles introducing animation studios from around the world.

We’ll start with Brand New School. Based in New York and Los Angeles, BNS is a collective of talented directors, producing commercial spots for major brands such as Apple, AT&T, Lexus, etc., as well as numerous visual identities for television networks.

I first discovered Brand New School through their old showreel, which used “video killed the radio star” as its soundtrack, giving it a very cheerful vibe :) But let’s catch up with their Fall 2008 demo reel:

Below is a selection of a few spots created by Brand New School. You can find many more on their website.

I love this kind of animation that mixes live-action footage with 2D and 3D elements that interact with the environment and actors, like in the commercials for Cellular South or Napster.
I really need to make more tutorials using video or photo footage — it would be a nice change from typography animations and open up new horizons...

Now I just need to find something interesting to shoot ;)
