Reulf is a short film directed by Quentin Carnicelli, Charles Klipfel, and Jean-François Jégo as part of the Arts et Technologies de l'Image (ATI) program at Paris VIII University.

In a black and white Paris, small cubic creatures bring color to the city with their brushes. Tracking, 3D, animation, rotoscoping, and color all come together in this poetic short film, set to music composed by Robert le Magnifique & Olivier Mellan:

From a technical standpoint, the film was completed over the course of three weeks, using several pieces of software:

  • Boujou for 3D tracking
  • 3Ds Max for modeling and animating the characters
  • After Effects for compositing, rotoscoping, and special effects
  • Premiere for editing

I can only imagine the countless hours spent rotoscoping each shot to create the masks for desaturation effects. The final result is really nice — congratulations, gentlemen!

If I had one small remark, it would be that the glow emitted by the characters is perhaps a bit too strong in some areas, which tends to separate them slightly too much from the footage, giving them a soft outline.
