I still love watching showreels, demo reels, montages, and all that… I never get tired of it. In this kind of exercise, most of the time, the music is quite rhythmic, and the images follow along. It’s a feast for the eyes, with fast-paced sequences syncing perfectly to the beat. That’s the case for many reels… But what happens when you use a calmer soundtrack instead?

You get a very beautiful demo reel — pleasant to watch, and even more pleasant to listen to. It was created by the animation studio Platige.

For those who, like me, really liked the music, it’s a song by Gabriel Rios — Brod Daylight.

Watching all these little sequences, I realize how eager I am to join ESMA in a year and finally learn 3D.

Lately, I’ve been experimenting with more and more video software. It allows me to get used to interfaces that are a bit more “professional” (and uglier…) and also to create and access effects specific to certain programs. And even though, for now, they seem very complicated (since they often work very differently from AE’s layer system), it helps me understand how 3D animations are created and which software was used to make them.

Recently, I’ve tried Realflow (for fluid simulation — to be used alongside a 3D software, useful for things like chocolate horses, for example) and Shake, Apple’s professional compositing software. And what can I say?

Well, I can say that I’ll be putting them aside for now. Node-based workflows and all these “wonderful” aspects of the visual effects world are still quite obscure to me and not useful for my current needs.
So, I’ll patiently stick with After Effects for a few more months and wait for a proper training.

But oh man, I can’t wait to learn real 3D — and everything that comes with it!!!
