Onesize Showreel 2009 and Memories..
Onesize is one of the first studios, along with Dstruckt and Anders Schroder, that introduced me to the world of motion design....
Today we’re talking about two studios, Logan and Mork&Lys, Apple’s favorite collaborators when it comes to producing their commercials. If you’ve ever wondered which studios create these kinds of spots, you’re in the right place! Since Mork&Lys is owned by Logan, their portfolios and projects have much in common, as both often work together on the same productions.
The colorful and dynamic iPod + iTunes ad campaigns have always appealed to me. The latest commercials have left behind solid color backgrounds in favor of more detailed worlds, with textures, gradients, and shapes to better complement the dancers. Even though these spots aren’t exactly new anymore, I still find them just as fresh — they make you want to move!
Below are 8 ads from the iPod + iTunes campaign created by Logan, with the first three being my favorites:
Even though these videos may appear relatively simple at first glance, there’s actually a lot of work behind the transitions and seamless flows. Looking at “Island” from a technical perspective, there’s an impressive amount of detail — smooth transitions between shots, constantly moving background textures, characters made of flowers, clever masking effects, etc. All these subtle details might go unnoticed, but they make the final spot rich and engaging. As an example, here’s the final transition in Island, slowed down frame by frame:
As a fan of colorful and rhythmic videos, these spots perfectly represent the kind of animation I’d love to create in the future.
However, it would be wrong to think that Logan or Mork&Lys only deal in neon colors. They also produced Apple’s latest product ads — featuring white, minimalist backgrounds, like those for the iPod Touch, iPod Nano, and MacBook. Below are two of these spots, with a much calmer and cleaner atmosphere, where the product itself takes the spotlight, modeled in 3D:
Apple isn’t their only client — below are the latest showreels from both studios. A car-themed reel is also available on Logan’s website. I’m not a fan of everything, but the quality is undeniable:
Finally, here are three videos produced by Mork&Lys for Autodesk and Casio, in a completely different world from the Apple commercials. The full 3D Autodesk product demos are particularly impressive, filled with dynamic transitions in every direction:
There are quite a few videos in this post — a good excuse to test a higher-quality encoding and a larger video size to make full use of the post’s width. Let’s focus on the visuals ;)
